Blood stasis is one of the most significant patterns in female fertility — and one of the most commonly missed. If your periods are painful with dark or clotted blood, if you have been diagnosed with endometriosis, fibroids, or adenomyosis, if there is a feeling of pressure or fullness in the pelvis, or if previous surgery has left scar tissue — Blood stasis is almost certainly part of your picture.
In Chinese medicine, conception requires not just the right substances (Blood, Yin, Yang, Jing) but the right movement. The pathways need to be clear. The uterus needs healthy circulation. When Blood stagnates — through cold, injury, surgery, chronic inflammation, or emotional constraint — those pathways get blocked, and the uterine environment becomes hostile to implantation.
Tao Hong Si Wu Tang moves that stagnation whilst simultaneously nourishing the Blood it moves — an important distinction, because formulas that only move Blood without nourishing can deplete over time. This formula resolves obstruction and restores circulation without creating deficiency.
Over three to six months, women typically report significantly reduced period pain, lighter and freer flow, less clotting, and a general improvement in the sense of pelvic heaviness or congestion that characterises this pattern.
What it helps with: Endometriosis · fibroids · adenomyosis · painful periods with dark or clotted blood · pelvic congestion or heaviness · poor uterine circulation · adhesion history · stabbing or fixed pain in the lower abdomen
Herbs: Tao Ren · Hong Hua · Dang Gui · Chuan Xiong · Chi Shao · Shu Di Huang
Dosage: Take as directed · used primarily in the menstrual phase · 3–6 month course
Please note: Not suitable during pregnancy or alongside blood-thinning medications. Do not use in the luteal phase if trying to conceive without practitioner guidance.
